Ways to Make an Impact at Meetings
Location: Where you position yourself in a group gathering
determines  to some extent how other see and relate to you and vice
versa.  Think of the following tips when in a group meeting.
Sitting in a straight back chair generally affords you more power than sitting in an arm chair.
A set close to the "position of control" (leader of meeting) is generally more powerful than one at a distance and ensure you will be seen.
Sofas are not seen as power positions

Whenever possible, arrive early enough at meeting to endure a good
choice of seating. If you need to refer to papers during the meeting,
find yourself a seat with table space enough to accommodate this
need.
Timing: Communicating and making your presence felt early in a
meeting is a good idea for two reasons. First, it tends to calm jitters
which you may be experiencing about speaking up in front of the
group. Hearing your own voice and "getting it over with" often
diminishes these fears. Second, saying something asserts your
energy and presence as a force in the gathering. Don't be the first to
comment or ask a question, but stay alert for the first appropriate
opportunity early in the proceedings where you can either ask a
pointed, relevant question or comment upon the topic being
discussed. Be clear, brief, and to the point. Non one appreciates
long-winded, rambling, or irrelevant monologues.
Getting Heard: Many women complain that when they make a verbal
contribution during a meeting, it's ignored or by-passed by the
group. If this happens to you, ask for response to what you've said
with a comment like, "Before we move on to John's point, I'd like to
hear the group's response to what I've said". When someone take
credit for an idea you've offered earlier, gain visibility and recognition
for your contribution with a comment like, " I'm pleased we'll be
adopting this policy. The reason I suggested it earlier was because I
believed it was a workable solution for this situation".
