. Determining Your Foundation Shade
How to determine the right shade for you:
When testing foundation shades, apply a small amount with a cotton swab on the side of your jaw line (on a clean face) and feather it out . If you can see obvious edges where you have applied it , you will need to choose a shade closer to your skin tone. If there are no obvious edges, you have chosen the right shade.

Next is the Feature Makeup Application ...
..which is used to enhance the eyes, cheeks and lips. It is the opportunity for a woman to highlight her best features. Eyes, cheek and lip color should be in proportion to each other. In other words, if you are wearing a dark shade of lipstick, your eyes should have enough color to carry attention away from the lips and up to the eyes where you want the focus to be.
Feature makeup comes in warm, cool or neutral shades.
If in doubt to whether you have warm or cool undertones, use neutral makeup. It will also give you a more natural and softer appearance.
Cheeks*
Powder Blush - Create cheek bones, not cheek balls. Powders are made from talc and sit on the skin. They are light and blend well. Cream blushes get into the pores and can clog them. Steps: Using brush start from front of ear and stroke lightly forward, just under cheek bone; blend and feather. (Cotton balls blend well)
Eyes**
Eye Color - Adds shape, drama and contour to the eyes in three steps and with practice, can make the eyes seem smaller or larger as needed. Neutral shades work well for day time use and look more natural.
Steps: Apply a Light Base Color over lid and brow bone Use Contour/Medium Shade on the orbital bone above crease upward from the outside corner of eye Use the Dark Color over the eyeliner and wrapped upward above the crease.
Mascara**
Choose a long wearing, conditioning formula which creates thicker, fuller lashes. Stick to brown shades of mascara unless you actually have black hair and lashes.
Eye Brows
Hold your finger on your temple above the center of your eyebrow and pull gently to see what you would look like with a face lift. You may need to pluck your eyebrows higher on the inside outer half of your brow to get a look close to what you saw. Giving yourself more space between your lashes and brows takes several years off your age. Use tones of grays instead of browns and blacks to define your eyebrows and give a more natural look.
Eye Liner
For the over forty sect, it is best to wear only eyeliner on the bottom lash area (again using tones of gray). Wearing liner on the top lash may give a harsh appearance. Use dark eye shadow in place of the liner on top lash area. When using pencil, blend well. There should be more on the outside edge than the inside. Avoid using colored pencils during the day.
Lip Liner
Prevents feathering and bleeding of lip color. Establishes smooth outline for better lip definition.
Lips*
Choosing the proper shades for lip colors (warm/cool/neutral) are most important. The wrong shades will draw attention to imperfections. If you are use to wearing lighter shades, try using a little darker shade of lip color. It will perk up your face considerably and make you look more alive. To keep lipstick on longer, use translucent powder between applications.
Look for products that contain Vitamin A, E, moisturizer and sunscreen.

Product Application End Result
You should see the result of the production application, not the product itself on the face.
Everything applied to the face should be edgeless except for the lips.
With practice you will be able to apply makeup in 4-5 minutes.

The Life and Death of Cosmetics
Every time you open a makeup container, bacteria, viruses and molds in the air are ready to move in. Just like food and medications, makeup can spoil. Most makeup has preservatives to kill bacteria, but high temperature, sunlight and frequent use can break them down.
Don't Share!
To avoid infection, the Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) recommends that you not share makeup and urges you to ask for new applicators when you test makeup in stores. The CTFA also says that you should wash your face and hands before you apply your makeup. And don't moisten makeup with water or saliva. They can add bacteria.
Replacing Your Makeup
Preservatives don't last forever. Whether you've had a product for one day or for one year, be suspicious if its color, consistency or smell changes. The guide below shows suggestions from laboratories and dermatologists about how often to replace makeup. Check and see if it's time to replace yours.
